Attention, Baylor community! We're facing a winter storm warning and extreme cold, so it's time to bundle up and prepare.
Winter Storm Warning and Extreme Cold Alert
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for North and Central Texas, including the Baylor University Waco campus. This warning is in effect from 6 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, until noon on Sunday, January 25. Additionally, an Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for Central Texas, lasting from 6 p.m. on Saturday to noon on Monday, January 26.
Weather Impact and Campus Adjustments
The main concern for our area is ice-related issues, with freezing rain and sleet expected on Saturday and Sunday. We'll also experience prolonged periods of sub-freezing temperatures and wind chills.
In response, Baylor Campus Facilities are taking action. They're adjusting building temperatures and airflow, preparing sidewalks and parking garages, and taking measures to prevent water-related issues. The Texas Department of Transportation is also treating local roads to prevent icy conditions.
Campus Dining and Services Updates
Penland Crossroads Dining Hall has made some adjustments to its schedule. Starbucks at Moody Memorial Library will be closed to support Penland operations. Penland will serve meals on disposable items to focus on meal service, and they're offering a special "Deep Freeze Discount" for non-meal plan holders, allowing them to dine for just $9.
Other campus dining locations have also adjusted their hours. The Bill Daniel Student Center (SUB) will have reduced hours this weekend, and some dining options like Panda Express and Sic 'Em Market will be closed. Moody Library's Starbucks will be open on Saturday and Sunday, and Varsity Coffee at the Hurd Welcome Center will be closed over the weekend.
Penland Crossroads will be open with limited hours and services, offering breakfast boxes for takeout. East Village Dining Commons will be closed for Sunday dinner service, and BANC has canceled Sunday dinner and Monday breakfast, planning to resume with dinner on Monday.
Campus Closures and Adjusted Hours
The Hurd Welcome Center and Jones Library will be closed on Saturday and Sunday. Moody Library will operate regular hours but with limited access to specific areas. The Bill Daniel Student Center (SUB) has adjusted its hours, and the McLane Student Life Center will close early on Friday and remain closed all day Saturday and Sunday.
The Baylor University Shuttle will not operate on Sunday, and classes on the main Waco campus will continue as scheduled on Monday, January 26. However, students and faculty should be prepared for remote instruction and work, as the decision to shift online will be made on Sunday afternoon based on weather conditions.
Stay Informed and Take Precautions
It's important to stay updated through Baylor's official communication channels, including email, the main website, and social media. Local media outlets will also provide the latest weather forecasts and local conditions.
Here are some key reminders and tips to prepare for the winter storm:
- Remember the Four P's: Take care of People, Pets, Plants, and Pipes.
- Off-campus residents, keep your heat on and set to at least 68°F to prevent frozen pipes. Open cabinets below sinks and let faucets drip slowly.
- Charge your devices in case of power interruptions.
- Dress warmly in layers and limit time outdoors due to extreme wind chills.
- Be cautious on slick surfaces like sidewalks and stairs, and report any hazards to Baylor Facilities.
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially with freezing rain expected. BUPD will have increased patrols to assist and respond to emergencies.
