These bacteria aren't your average travel bugs. They target the gut, causing symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most people recover fully, this is the part most people miss: young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems are at serious risk of life-threatening complications. The bacteria spread through contact with contaminated feces, whether directly from person to person or indirectly from tainted food, water, or surfaces.

The majority of Shigella cases have been traced back to the Santa Maria and Boa Vista areas of Cape Verde. Santa Maria, a resort town on Sal Island, and Boa Vista, the archipelago's easternmost island, are popular destinations, especially in February when temperatures hover around a pleasant 25°C. But here’s the kicker: Hurricane Erin struck Cape Verde last August, damaging water and sanitation infrastructure, which the World Health Organization warns has heightened the risk of disease from contaminated water and carrier insects.

The tragedy has hit close to home for the families of Mark Ashley, Elena Walsh, Karen Pooley, and a 56-year-old man from Watford, all of whom died after contracting stomach bugs in Cape Verde. These four are among six Britons who have lost their lives since January 2023, with their families now pursuing personal injury claims against package holiday firm Tui.
