I've been an avid fan of the iPhone SE series for years, but my experience with the iPhone 16e left me wanting more. After a year of using it, I still feel the same way, and with the upcoming iPhone 17e launch, I have some crucial upgrades in mind to make it a truly impressive budget phone.
Here's what I believe the iPhone 17e needs to stay competitive and offer a superior user experience.
Dual Rear Cameras
In today's market, having at least two rear cameras is a must. While the iPhone 16e's single 48MP camera performs admirably, it limits creative possibilities. A second camera, ideally an ultra-wide lens, would enhance the device's capabilities and open up new avenues for photography and video.
120Hz Display Refresh Rate
The lack of a high refresh rate display on the iPhone 16e is a noticeable drawback. Upgrading to a 120Hz refresh rate would provide a significant boost in performance and user experience. It's an essential feature that should be standard on all new iPhones, especially when budget phones are already offering it.
Video-Out via DisplayPort
I'd love to see the iPhone 17e support video-out through DisplayPort. This feature is absent on the iPhone 16e, but it's a game-changer for connectivity and versatility. With DisplayPort support, users can easily connect their iPhone to a monitor or TV, mirroring the screen or even using it as a secondary display.

These upgrades are not only feasible but would greatly enhance the iPhone 17e's appeal and functionality. While Apple may have other surprises in store for the March 4 event, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for these improvements. It's frustrating to think that Apple might hold back on these features for the iPhone 18e, leaving budget-conscious consumers waiting for a truly recommendable device.
