Is 3I/ATLAS Alien Tech or Just a Comet? Harvard Professor Avi Loeb Weighs In (2026)

Is it alien, or isn't it? That's the question that has swirled around the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, and now, even the most vocal proponent of the alien technology theory seems to be softening his stance. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, who initially sparked excitement with the idea that 3I/ATLAS might be extraterrestrial in origin, now leans towards a more conventional explanation.

The object, which reached its closest point to Earth recently, about 170 million miles away, is currently journeying back into the vastness of space. Loeb, in an interview, acknowledged that 3I/ATLAS didn't exhibit any unusual behavior as it approached our planet.

He still believes that the object's unique characteristics warrant further investigation before it disappears from view in the coming months. But, when it comes to the alien tech hypothesis, Loeb is no longer pushing as hard. He stated that based on the current data, a natural origin is the most probable explanation, although there are still many unanswered questions.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku agrees that 3I/ATLAS is unusual. However, he emphasizes the object's age as a key factor. Unlike other comets, which are typically 3 to 4 billion years old, 3I/ATLAS might be around 7 billion years old.

This immense age could explain the comet's unique features, such as its unusual nickel content and chemical composition. Over billions of years, the object has had ample time to accumulate different elements and experience various environments, which could account for its distinctive properties.

And this is the part most people miss... The mystery surrounding 3I/ATLAS is far from solved. While the focus has shifted away from alien technology, the object's unusual properties and age continue to fascinate scientists.

What do you think? Do you believe 3I/ATLAS is a natural phenomenon, or do you still hold out hope for a more exotic explanation? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
