Sources tell us that Aguilar plans to attend the Combine next week, even as he navigates the legal process to return to Tennessee for another collegiate season.
Here's where it gets controversial: Aguilar has already received an invitation to the Combine, but it was kept under wraps due to the ongoing eligibility process. Last Friday, Aguilar and his legal team appeared in Knox County Chancery Court, where Chancellor Chris Heagerty promised a swift decision on whether Aguilar will be granted an injunction against the NCAA's rules for former junior college players.
And this is the part most people miss: Aguilar is planning to attend the Combine for just 48 hours, instead of the usual five-day event. He doesn't want to risk jeopardizing his eligibility, and even if he gets a positive ruling this week, he's still planning to limit his Combine participation to two days, just in case the ruling is overturned on appeal.
The National Invitation Camp (NIC) has notified all 32 NFL teams that Aguilar is scheduled as a limited participant at the Combine, based on the possibility that his eligibility is restored, and he returns to college ball for the 2026 season.
"We need clarity soon, ideally before the Combine begins," a source shared with On3. "Joey and his team are hopeful for good news, but either way, the Combine experience will be valuable. It's just not going to be the full experience like other quarterbacks attending."
The Combine kicks off next Monday and runs through March 2nd at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Quarterback drills are scheduled for next Saturday, February 28th.
Aguilar underwent surgery in January to remove a benign tumor from his throwing arm, which had been causing him pain and weakness. Despite this setback, Aguilar led the SEC in passing yards per game (274.2) and threw an impressive 24 touchdowns in his first season at Tennessee after transferring from UCLA.
The trickiest part for Aguilar is the potential scenario where the judge rules against him this week. Will he still attend the Combine for the abbreviated two days, or will he stay for the entire event?
Aguilar's college journey has been unique. He started at City College of San Francisco in 2019, redshirted that year, and then the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. He played at Diablo Valley Community College in 2021-22, transferred to Appalachian State for the 2023 and 2024 seasons, and then moved to UCLA in 2025 before finally landing at Tennessee.
Aguilar has also taken legal action, removing himself from a federal lawsuit filed by former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, which challenges an NCAA rule that counts junior college seasons against players' eligibility for Division I football. Aguilar's new suit argues that his junior college seasons shouldn't count against him, as he's only played three seasons in the NCAA ranks.
If Aguilar gains another year of eligibility, he stands to earn over $2 million in NIL deals at Tennessee. While he's not projected as a high-round draft pick this year, another season of college football could significantly boost his NFL prospects.
