Luxury Scottish Hotel Transformed into Family Home: The Story of Blackaddie House (2026)

A historic Scottish hotel, dating back to 1540, is set to be transformed into a family home. The Blackaddie House Hotel in Sanquhar, a four-star establishment, has been sold to new owners who plan to restore it to its original purpose. This marks a significant change from its recent past as a luxury hotel, which began about 60 years ago.

The main property, along with several other buildings, was listed for sale last year with an asking price of over £950,000. The sale of the main building has now been finalized, and the surrounding cottages and the owner's bungalow may follow suit in the future. Harriet Simpson, a senior property consultant with Fine & Country Scotland, confirmed that the new owners intend to use the main property as a family home.

The hotel's history is deeply intertwined with St Bride's Church, originally serving as the rectory. Over the years, the building has undergone significant upgrades, with the new owners investing a substantial amount to enhance its facilities. Despite the sale, the property retains its enviable location by the River Nith, a popular spot for fishing, and excellent transportation links, including a nearby mainline railway station and easy access to Glasgow and Dumfries.

This transition from a luxury hotel to a family home highlights the dynamic nature of the property market and the potential for such historic buildings to be reimagined for modern living, sparking discussions about the future of heritage sites and their role in the community.
