Breaking news for Northampton shoppers: Two Poundland stores are closing their doors this month. This announcement has sparked concern, but let's dive into the details.
It's a tough time for some Poundland locations in Northampton. By the end of December, two stores will be shutting down. The Sixfields shop is set to close on December 31st, and the Weston Favell store will follow suit on December 19th.
But here's where it gets controversial... This decision comes after the budget chain was acquired for a mere £1 by the investment company Gordon Brothers back in June. The new owners have stated that they need to close roughly 100 stores to avoid administration.
Now, before you worry about all your local Poundland stores, there's good news! Several other locations in the area are safe. The stores in Northampton, two in Kettering (including a Pep & Co), one in Wellingborough, and one in Corby, will remain open.
Disappointing News: It's important to note that this isn't the first wave of closures. By the end of September, 57 stores had already been shut down as Poundland targeted its least profitable locations. The company anticipates a reduction from approximately 800 stores at the start of the restructuring to between 650 and 700 once the process is complete. The company is trying to negotiate cheaper rents and close branches where this is not possible. Darren MacDonald, the UK country manager, acknowledged the disappointment of these closures.
