A Legend Lost: Celebrating the Unforgettable Terry Boers
The Power of Authenticity
Back in 1994, as an intern, I was fortunate enough to witness the dynamic duo of Dan McNeil and Terry Boers. McNeil, a radio maestro, and Boers, a wild and eccentric talent, left an indelible mark on me. Their on-air chemistry was electric, with Boers' unique blend of humor and insight leaving us in awe.
"Whoop!" - a signature exclamation that could only come from Terry. He had a way of seamlessly transitioning from intense sports analysis to hilarious one-liners, leaving McNeil in fits of laughter. But here's where it gets controversial... Terry's on-air persona was an extension of his true self. He didn't put on an act; he was just as entertaining off the mic, needling colleagues and offering witty asides.
A Friend and a Mentor
Sadly, we bid farewell to our beloved Terry Boers last Friday. He passed away surrounded by his loving family, leaving a void in our hearts. Terry's authenticity and comfort in his own skin were inspiring. He embraced his quirks and flaws, and that's what made him so endearing.
When it came to storytelling, Terry was a master. Take, for instance, the passing of former White Sox player Johnny Dickshot in 1997. Over two hours, Terry crafted every joke imaginable, delivering them with impeccable timing and a comic's touch. It was a display of pure entertainment genius.
Terry had a knack for connecting with out-of-town writers, bringing unique voices to the airwaves. Through him, I discovered Art Thiel, Patrick Reusse, and Terry Pluto, among others. He built a network of funny and insightful guests who were eager to join him on air. I often wonder about the hotel bar conversations that fostered those friendships.
The Art of Radio Partnership
Terry's collaboration with Dan Bernstein showcased his versatility. He proved that you could create exceptional radio with diverse partners while staying true to yourself. Moreover, he taught me that building goodwill through kindness allows for occasional moments of meanness without crossing the line.
Terry's approach to radio was unique. He believed in being honest and sometimes a little mean to get the job done. It's a fine line, and he walked it with grace. He was accountable, and his kindness and humor made him easy to forgive. Years later, we reflected on those moments, understanding the complexities of his approach.
Terry had a self-deprecating humor that disarmed and warmed his audience. He invited us to laugh with him, knowing the power of humility. It was a clever strategy that added depth to his interviews.
A North Star for Chicago Sports Radio
Terry, along with his Dans, created a standard for Chicago sports radio. They involved producers, fostering a sense of community that grew with each show. Every partnership I've formed has been an attempt to reach that star, and even if we haven't quite hit it, the journey has brought people together.
In retrospect, Terry's comedic influence shaped the station's identity, leaving a lasting impact. His legacy lives on, inspiring us all.
Thank you, Terry Boers, for being a beacon of authenticity and for the memories you've left behind.
