A Jockey's Homecoming: Umberto Rispoli's Return to Hong Kong's Racing Scene
Umberto Rispoli, a name synonymous with energy and enthusiasm, has made a triumphant return to Hong Kong, a place that, in his own words, "humbles you." His journey back to the city's racing scene is a tale of resilience and a testament to the power of second chances.
Rispoli's previous stint in Hong Kong, spanning almost eight years, was marked by a frustrating lack of opportunities despite his impressive 122 wins. This led him to seek a change, and he packed his bags for the United States. Fast forward to the present, and Rispoli is back, riding high on his success in the United States, where he has achieved 127 wins, including a stellar victory aboard Journalism in the Group One Preakness Stakes.
"This place teaches you lessons, both good and bad. It strengthens your mental fortitude. Wherever you go, the lows in Hong Kong serve as a reminder of the challenges faced here. To me, it's the toughest jurisdiction for a rider," Rispoli shared, reflecting on his time away.
His departure, though, was amicable. He gave a month's notice and even stayed longer to ensure a smooth transition for the club. "Finishing on good terms is important, and I believe that's why the club invited me back for the Longines International Jockeys' Championship (IJC)," he added.
And so, Rispoli returns to the IJC for the first time, eager to showcase his skills at Happy Valley, a circuit he knows well. "It's like I never left. I always wanted to ride in the IJC, and now I'm here, I'm determined to win it," he said with a smile.
But here's where it gets controversial: Rispoli faces a challenge with poor gate draws for his mounts, Harmony Fire, Can't Go Wong, and Highland Rahy. However, if he manages to stay in contention, he could finish with a bang aboard the in-form Tourbillon Golfer, starting from a favorable barrier five.
"My rides are definitely good, and I believe there's a live chance for everyone. The draws will play a role, and unfortunately, I'm outside for three out of four races. But I'll manage, and I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces in the beer garden," he said, highlighting the unique atmosphere of Happy Valley.
After the IJC, where 12 of the world's best jockeys will battle for a HK$1 million bonus, Rispoli will take six rides on Sunday's Longines Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) undercard at Sha Tin. "The club was kind enough to invite me to stay for Sunday, and with no races back home, it's a great opportunity. I'm not just here for the racing though; I'm enjoying the city's restaurants and the safety it offers, making it a special place for me and my family," he concluded.
So, will Rispoli's experience and knowledge of Happy Valley prove crucial in his quest for IJC glory? And what impact will his wide gates have on his overall performance? These are the questions racing fans are asking as they eagerly await the outcome of this highly anticipated return.
