Victoria's Surf Coast Flash Flooding: A Case of Miscommunication or Unpredictable Weather?
The recent flash flooding on Victoria's surf coast has sparked debate over the timing and effectiveness of warnings issued to holidaymakers. While authorities claim the warnings were not issued late, the aftermath has left many questioning the preparedness and predictability of such extreme weather events.
On Thursday, an unprecedented downpour caused flash flooding in the region, leading to severe consequences. Cars were swept into the ocean, campgrounds were inundated, and approximately 400 people were displaced. The Wye, Kennett, and Cumberland rivers overflowed, causing significant damage to vehicles and personal belongings.
Colac Mayor Jason Schram expressed frustration, criticizing the authorities' failure to predict the heavy rainfall. He questioned how such a substantial amount of rainfall (180mm) could have been overlooked in the catchment area. The aftermath was chaotic, with mud, debris, and personal items scattered across the affected areas.
Dharni Giri, a spokesperson for Victoria's emergency management authority, defended the response. She explained that the region experienced an extraordinary weather event, receiving over 180mm of rain in just six hours. The terrain played a role in accelerating water flows through the river systems. Giri assured that more than 10,000 residents in the area received timely text alerts, instructing them to move to higher ground.
The Bureau of Meteorology's spokesperson confirmed that severe weather warnings were issued after monitoring conditions closely. A thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding was issued at 11:57 am AEDT. As rainfall observations increased rapidly, the warning was escalated, and the SES issued a Watch and Act warning for the region.
Angus Hines, a senior meteorologist, predicted more flash flooding in southern NSW and Victoria in the coming days. He warned of severe weather on Friday, including damaging wind gusts and heavy, persistent rain. The Illawarra and south coast of NSW could face significant flash flooding, with potential road closures and travel disruptions.
The climate crisis, as highlighted by the Insurance Council of Australia and the World Meteorological Organisation, contributes to the country's vulnerability to extreme weather and natural disasters. This event serves as a reminder of the challenges in predicting and managing such unpredictable weather patterns.
