The RLPA's Stance on the Lomax Saga: Protecting Player Rights and Fairness
The Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) has taken a firm stand in the ongoing contract saga involving Zac Lomax, emphasizing the importance of player rights and fair treatment within the league.
Lomax's situation began with an early release from his Eels contract, allowing him to pursue opportunities with R360, a competition that was later delayed. Now, with the Storm showing interest, the player's future remains uncertain.
The Eels have set conditions for Lomax's potential move, requesting specific players in return. However, the RLPA's chief executive, Clint Newton, has urged the clubs involved to refrain from pressuring players into any move.
Newton stated, "Players with existing contracts have every right to see out their futures at the club they signed with." He emphasized the importance of honoring these commitments, even if it means avoiding horse-trading situations where players are used as pawns.
The association believes that clubs should not engage in negotiations that involve trading players as conditions. Instead, they advocate for fair and mutually beneficial agreements.
Newton continued, "We want the best athletes in our game, and Zac is undoubtedly one of them. Our priority is to ensure all parties reach a fair agreement."
The Eels' chief executive, Jim Sarantinos, provided additional context, explaining that the team agreed to certain terms with Lomax to allow him to explore other options. He emphasized the importance of protecting the player's interests during the release period.
This stance by the RLPA highlights their commitment to safeguarding player rights and promoting fair practices within the league, even in high-profile contract situations.
